Mohali's Encroachment Drive: Vendors Face Action

09 Dec, 2025

In a determined effort to tackle illegal encroachments, Mohali's Phase 11 witnessed a significant drive by the Municipal Corporation (MC) targeting vendors who quickly reestablished their stalls. Just days after a large-scale removal operation, many vendors returned, prompting officials to take swift action once again.

The recent crackdown saw the MC clearing massive roadside encroachments, particularly fruit sellers and a popular street-side eatery, Chhatwal Tawa Fry. Despite these efforts, vendors reinstated their setups by the next morning, showcasing the challenge faced by authorities in maintaining order.

On Monday, as part of the renewed enforcement action, goods and carts belonging to the fruit vendors were seized, alongside the belongings of Chhatwal Tawa Fry. The operation extended to clearing unauthorized stalls and carts throughout the area, ensuring a stricter approach this time around.

Notably, the action also targeted encroachments near the residences of political figures, including AAP leader Babbi Badal and a retired Haryana DGP-rank officer, emphasizing that the MC is committed to a fair and unbiased approach. Municipal Corporation Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh Sidhu stated that no favoritism would be shown, and that the drive would continue according to the law.

MLA Kulwant Singh announced an ambitious goal: to make Mohali “rehri-pheri free” within two months. He acknowledged the uncontrolled increase in street carts and stalls over the past few years, which have significantly hindered the city’s appearance and caused traffic issues. To combat this, special staff has been tasked with removing these encroachments on a ‘war footing.’

MLA Singh urged street vendors to obtain proper licenses and to refrain from occupying main roads or market parking spaces. This proactive approach aims to create a cleaner, more organized environment in Mohali, benefiting both the vendors and the community at large.

As this drive progresses, the residents of Mohali await a transformation that promises to restore order and enhance the city's aesthetic appeal.
