MTV's UK Music Channels to Shut Down by 2025

14 Oct, 2025

MTV is preparing to shut down five of its iconic music channels in the UK by the end of 2025, marking a significant shift for fans who have cherished the network for decades. Channels including MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will no longer be available. This decision has left many viewers feeling heartbroken, as MTV has been synonymous with music culture since its inception.

Despite the closure of these channels, MTV HD, the flagship channel of the network, will continue broadcasting as usual. Many fans have expressed confusion on social media, fearing that MTV as a whole is shutting down, which is not the case. The parent company, Paramount, is implementing cost-cutting measures that affect music channels globally, including in countries like Australia, Brazil, and France, with the goal of reducing expenses by up to $500 million.

In the UK, these budget cuts have led to significant layoffs and the cancellation of original programs such as Gonzo and Fresh Out UK. Still, MTV channels maintained a modest viewership, with MTV Music attracting 1.3 million viewers in July, showing that there is still a demand for the content they provide.

As MTV evolves, it will continue to thrive on social media platforms and through its streaming service, Paramount+. The brand, which revolutionized the music industry when it launched in the United States in 1981, began with the now-iconic video "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles. Over the years, MTV expanded into Europe, launching a dedicated UK channel in 1997, which has been a significant part of the music landscape.

While the closure of these music channels is a sign of changing times, the spirit of MTV lives on, reminding us of the powerful connection between music and culture. Fans are encouraged to support artists and continue enjoying music in new ways, even as the landscape shifts. MTV may be changing, but its legacy will always remain.
