Mumbai Heavy Rain: Red Alert and Traffic Disruptions

15 Sep, 2025

Mumbai is currently facing heavy rainfall, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the next three hours. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cautioned residents about potential flooding and strong winds accompanying the rain. With water accumulating on the tracks, local trains have experienced delays, although the Western Railway stated that operations remain normal despite the continuous downpour.

As the city grapples with the rainfall, significant traffic disruptions have been reported. The Mumbai Traffic Police announced the closure of traffic at Andheri Subway due to one to one-and-a-half feet of accumulated rainwater. This has resulted in traffic being diverted via Gokhale Bridge, causing further inconvenience to commuters.

A social media user shared their experience of driving through knee-deep water in Worli, highlighting the challenges faced by residents even in affluent neighborhoods. The rainfall has varied across the city, with Colaba recording the highest at 88.2 mm between Sunday and Monday morning, followed by Bandra and Byculla.

In light of these conditions, the IMD has issued an orange alert for several surrounding areas including Thane, Pune, and Raigadh, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Residents in these regions are strongly advised to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety measures, such as steering clear of weak structures and checking road conditions before heading out.

As the city continues to face heavy rainfall, it is crucial for everyone to remain cautious and adhere to advisories issued by local authorities. The BMC has urged residents to contact their control room at 1916 for assistance during emergencies. With the weather expected to remain unsettled, vigilance and preparedness will be key for Mumbai residents in the coming days.
