Mumbai Rains: 4 Dead, 120 Evacuated in Latest Downpour

17 Sep, 2025

Heavy rains have returned to Mumbai, leading to significant disruption and loss of life. In the last 24 hours, four people have died, and over 120 individuals were evacuated from flood-affected areas in Maharashtra. The State Disaster Management Department has been working tirelessly, aided by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other rescue teams.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Palghar districts, predicting moderate rainfall with thunderstorms. Fortunately, the water stock in the seven lakes supplying potable water to Mumbai is nearly full, at 99 percent capacity. This assures the city of adequate water supply for the next several months, despite the ongoing rains.

In the previous 24 hours, the average rainfall recorded in various areas of Mumbai included 40 mm in the western suburbs and 39 mm in the island city division. The IMD's data indicates that rainfall will continue for the next few days, especially in the Marathwada region, where heavy showers are expected to persist.

With the city on high alert, authorities are urging residents to avoid coastal and low-lying areas, as flooding remains a serious risk. The rains have also caused disruptions in train services, with some delays reported across the Central Railway network. However, timely interventions have prevented complete service halts.

The heavy downpours have not only affected urban areas but have also resulted in significant flooding in rural parts of Maharashtra, leading to evacuations in villages, including Pune district. The situation remains critical, and the government is closely monitoring the rainfall and flood conditions.

As rescue operations continue, citizens are advised to stay updated through official channels and exercise caution during this challenging weather. With the IMD forecasting more rain, the focus remains on ensuring safety and effective disaster management across the affected regions.
