Mumbai Weather Alert: Schools Closed Amid Heavy Rain

Mumbai is currently under an orange alert due to heavy rainfall, leading the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to announce the closure of schools and colleges on Tuesday. This decision comes as the city grapples with severe weather conditions that have significantly disrupted daily life.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway faced significant challenges, including landslides that blocked traffic. The 'Missing Link' bypass section was closed following a landslide near Tunnel 2, the longest tunnel on the route. This incident left the Mumbai-bound lane shut for over 18 hours, causing major delays and rerouting of vehicles. Additionally, the old Mumbai-Pune highway also experienced waterlogging, further complicating travel.

Train services on the Central Railway were also severely affected, particularly on the Karjat-Lonavala section. With 600 millimeters of rain falling in just 24 hours, multiple landslides disrupted rail traffic, leading to the cancellation of 27 trains and the diversion of 57 others. Commuters faced significant inconvenience as the timeline for resuming operations remained unclear.

Tragically, the heavy rains resulted in the loss of four lives due to a landslide and wall collapse in Pune, with additional individuals swept away in related incidents. Authorities have been actively involved in rescue operations, moving over 500 people to safer locations. This highlights the urgent need for improved disaster management and infrastructure to protect citizens during extreme weather conditions.

In a related development, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has called for coordinated action to address waterlogging issues in the national capital. She emphasized that citizens expect solutions regardless of jurisdictional boundaries, urging officials to conduct field visits to understand the situation better.
