12 Sep, 2025

The 2025 World Athletics Championships are set to take place from September 13 in Tokyo, and the anticipation is palpable among Indian sports fans. This year, a total of 19 Indian athletes will represent the nation, showcasing their skills on an international platform. Leading the contingent is none other than Neeraj Chopra, the reigning World Champion in men’s javelin throw, who has qualified through a wild card.

Neeraj will be joined by fellow javelin throwers Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav, and Yashvir Singh, marking a historic moment as this is the first time India will field four competitors in this event at the World Championships. The previous championships saw only three Indian athletes competing in the javelin throw, where Neeraj made headlines by winning gold and his compatriots, Kishore Kumar Jena and DP Manu, finished in the top six.

Aside from javelin, other athletes have also made their mark. Parul Chaudhary will compete in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, while Gulveer Singh represents India in the men’s 5000m. Praveen Chithravel will take part in the men’s triple jump, having met the qualification standards. Moreover, sprinter Animesh Kujur has created history as the first Indian man to run in a sprint race at the World Championships, qualifying in the men’s 200m events.

Notably, long jumper Sreeshankar Murali's qualification is inspiring; he made it to the championships just after recovering from knee surgery, achieving a jump of 8.06m at the Inter-State meet to secure his spot. The Indian squad comprises 15 male and four female athletes, showcasing a diverse range of talents.

The competition schedule is packed, starting with the men’s and women’s 35km race walk finals on September 13. The following days will feature events like the men’s high jump, women’s 1500m heats, and much more. For those eager to catch the action, Star Sports Network will provide comprehensive coverage, including dedicated morning and evening broadcasts. Fans can also stream the events live via the JioHotstar app and website.

This championships not only highlight the athletes' dedication and hard work but also indicate the growing prominence of athletics in India. With stellar performances expected, this event promises to be an exhilarating experience for athletes and fans alike.
