Nehra Defends Gill Amidst T20I Criticism
Shubman Gill has faced criticism for his recent performances in the T20I format, which has raised concerns about his form as India’s vice-captain and opening batsman. However, Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra has come forward to defend him. Gill’s lack of runs in the series against South Africa, where he was dismissed for 4 and then a golden duck, has caused a stir among fans and analysts alike.
Nehra emphasized that it is unfair to judge a player's form based on a couple of matches. He pointed out that T20 is a fast-paced game, and players should not be evaluated so quickly, especially after only two matches in a series. “If we start evaluating players like Gill after two or three matches, then it is going to be difficult,” Nehra stated, highlighting the importance of giving players time to find their rhythm.
In the context of the Indian team, Nehra noted that there are many options available for the opening slot. He mentioned that if necessary, the team could explore other combinations, such as pairing Sai Sudharsan with Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, he firmly believes that making rash decisions on player selections can be detrimental to the team's performance.
Support for Gill also came from Team India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate. After India’s defeat in Mullanpur, he expressed confidence in Gill's ability to bounce back. He pointed out that Gill had shown signs of improvement during the Australian tour and that despite his recent struggles, he retains the class required to perform at a high level.
Both Nehra and ten Doeschate have emphasized that Gill's past performances, especially in the IPL, should not be overlooked. With impressive records of scoring 600-800 runs in previous seasons, there is a strong belief that he will soon regain his form. As the cricketing season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching Gill’s performance, hoping to see him return to his best.
