Nepal Protests Lead to Flight Suspensions
The ongoing anti-government protests in Nepal, primarily driven by the youth, have escalated dramatically, leading to significant disruptions in the country. The Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu has been closed for commercial flights due to the deteriorating security situation, which has caused widespread chaos for travelers. Indian airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, have suspended their flights to and from Kathmandu, impacting numerous passengers who were planning to travel to Nepal.
The protests began in response to the Nepalese government's decision to ban over two dozen social media platforms, which many young people saw as an infringement on their rights. The protests quickly turned violent, resulting in police clashes with demonstrators. Tragically, at least 19 protesters lost their lives, and over 200 were injured. As the situation continued to worsen, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced his resignation, indicating a significant political shift.
In light of these events, IndiGo and Air India have issued travel advisories, urging passengers to reconsider their travel plans and offering options for refunds or alternate flights. They advised Indian nationals currently in Nepal to exercise caution and follow the guidelines issued by Nepali authorities. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed condolences for the lives lost and hope for a peaceful resolution to the unrest.
