New Guidelines on Obesity: A Disease to Treat
Obesity is increasingly being recognized as a disease that requires treatment, not just a risk factor for other health issues like diabetes or heart disease. Recent advancements in weight-loss medications, such as GLP-1 drugs, have sparked discussions about how to diagnose obesity correctly. A new approach, developed by the Lancet Commission, suggests using additional measurements beyond the traditional BMI to identify "clinical obesity." This includes assessing waist size and organ function and recognizing symptoms like breathlessness and pain. While some individuals may not show signs of illness, they are classified as having "preclinical obesity," indicating a risk for future health issues. This new understanding is gaining support from major health organizations, paving the way for improved treatment.
