Pat Cummins Uncertain for Ashes Opener in Perth

06 Sep, 2025

Pat Cummins, the captain of the Australian cricket team, is currently uncertain about his participation in the upcoming Ashes opener in Perth, scheduled for November 21. This uncertainty arises from a lumbar bone stress injury that he has been nursing. With the Ashes just around the corner, Cummins has already been ruled out of the white-ball series against India and New Zealand, which raises concerns about his fitness for the Test series.

Despite the injury, Cummins remains optimistic about his recovery. He stated, “I had another scan on Monday, which was not terrible, but enough to know there’s a little bit there and that I need to be careful for the next little bit.” He is currently limiting his bowling and other activities to ensure he does not aggravate the injury further. The selectors will monitor his recovery closely to decide on his participation in the Ashes.

In light of Cummins' injury, there are discussions about the possibility of selecting another player, like Steve Smith, to lead the team if he is unable to play. Cummins expressed that missing the first Test would be “devastating,” emphasizing the significance of the Ashes series. He is committed to doing everything possible to get back on the field, indicating that he is willing to take some risks in his rehabilitation process.

Cummins, who had previously led Australia to victories in the 50-over World Cup and the World Test Championship, sustained this injury during the Test series in the West Indies. After returning home, he experienced back pain, which prompted him to undergo a scan. He remarked on his injury history, stating, “Sometimes you may just get unlucky and you bowl lots of overs... but once you get home and everything settles down, it hung around a little bit.”

As the Ashes series approaches, all eyes will be on Cummins and his recovery. His leadership and performance are crucial for the Australian team, and fans hope to see him return to peak form in time for the iconic series against England. The team’s strategy will largely depend on his fitness and readiness to play in the much-anticipated opener in Perth.
