The inevitable finally happened as Punjab Kings (PBKS) faced their first defeat of IPL 2026 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Mullanpur. Coming into the match with a seven-match unbeaten streak, the Kings had won six games, with one being washed out. Despite this loss, they remain at the top of the standings with 13 points from eight matches, while RR climbed to third place with 12 points from nine matches.

Rajasthan Royals won the toss and opted to bowl first, putting PBKS to bat. Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh got off to a strong start, contributing 37 runs in just 14 balls. Arya scored 29 while Singh made 59 runs, showcasing his impressive form with four half-centuries in the tournament. Captain Shreyas Iyer added 30 runs, but it was Marcus Stoinis who took charge after Iyer's dismissal. Stoinis scored a blistering 62 runs off just 24 balls, leading PBKS to a total of 222 runs for four wickets.

However, in T20 cricket, no total is ever safe. Rajasthan Royals’ openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi quickly set the pace with a 50-run partnership in just 19 balls. Jaiswal scored 51 runs, keeping the momentum going, while Sooryavanshi fell short of a half-century. Dhruv Jurel joined Jaiswal but was dismissed due to a full toss from Yuzvendra Chahal after a review confirmed it wasn't waist-high.

Despite RR facing a slight setback losing Jurel and later Riyan Parag, who scored 29 runs, the chase turned in their favor. Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey partnered effectively, with Ferreira scoring an unbeaten 52 runs. They completed the chase with four balls to spare, ensuring a thrilling finish to the match.

Looking ahead, Punjab Kings will next face Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, while Rajasthan Royals will host Delhi Capitals in Jaipur. As the IPL 2026 season unfolds, fans are excited to see how the teams will perform in upcoming matches, especially with the intense competition for playoff spots building up.
