Punjab Kings Surprise with Key Auction Picks

18 Dec, 2025

The IPL 2026 auction saw Punjab Kings (PBKS) take a cautious approach, making only four acquisitions. Retaining their successful core from the previous season, they focused on strategic picks rather than a large number of players. One of the highlights was their decision to acquire Cooper Connolly, an Australian all-rounder, for Rs 3 crore. This move caught many by surprise, including their own captain, Shreyas Iyer.

Shreyas Iyer revealed that Connolly was not initially on their radar. "Honestly, he wasn’t there in our mind at the start," Iyer stated. However, as discussions progressed, they recognized Connolly’s potential as a perfect fit for their middle order. His temperament and ability to finish games, crucial in the high-pressure environment of the IPL, made him an attractive option.

In addition to Connolly, Punjab Kings secured Australian pacer Ben Dwarshuis for Rs 4.40 crore. Dwarshuis not only adds depth to their bowling attack but also brings a reliable power-hitting option to the lower order, which is vital during the death overs. His presence is expected to bolster the team significantly in crucial matches.

Returning to the squad is Pravin Dubey, who was re-acquired at his base price of INR 30 lakh. Dubey brings essential Indian spin support, complementing the existing spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Harpreet Brar. The inclusion of promising young talent Vishal Nishad, also signed at Rs 30 lakh, further strengthens PBKS's domestic core, ensuring a balance between experience and youth.

Entering the auction with a purse of Rs 11.5 crore, Punjab Kings successfully utilized Rs 8 crore to enhance their squad. With a strong mix of capped and uncapped players, they are poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming season. The strategic decisions made during the auction demonstrate their commitment to building a competitive team capable of contending for the title once again.
