05 Jan, 2026

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to commission the pollution control vessel Samudra Pratap today at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). This significant event is part of Singh's visit to Goa, which aims to enhance India's maritime security and environmental protection capabilities.

Samudra Pratap is notable as the first indigenously designed and built Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and holds the title of the largest ship in the ICG fleet. Measuring 114.5 meters in length and 16.5 meters in breadth, it has a displacement of 4,170 tonnes.

This advanced vessel is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including a 30mm CRN-91 gun and two stabilised remote-controlled guns. It also features an Integrated Bridge System, Integrated Platform Management System, and Automated Power Management System to ensure efficient operations. Additionally, the ship has a high-capacity external firefighting system.

One of the remarkable features of Samudra Pratap is its Dynamic Positioning capability (DP-1), which allows it to maintain its position effectively. It holds FiFi-2/FFV-2 notation certification, indicating its readiness for firefighting operations. The vessel is equipped with sophisticated oil spill detection and response systems, including an oil fingerprinting machine and a chemical detector, enhancing its ability to manage pollution incidents within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and beyond.

Singh emphasized during his visit the importance of "Aatmanirbharta" or self-reliance in defense, stating it is a strategic necessity. He highlighted the role of institutions like the Goa Shipyard Limited in transforming this necessity into reality. The indigenous shipbuilding efforts symbolize India's sovereignty and commitment to maintaining a strong presence in maritime affairs.

The commissioning of Samudra Pratap marks a significant milestone in India's journey toward enhancing its coastal and maritime security capabilities. The vessel is expected to play a crucial role in marine pollution control, law enforcement, and search and rescue operations, thereby strengthening India's efforts to safeguard its waters and promote environmental sustainability.

By commissioning such vessels, India showcases its commitment to protecting the environment while also bolstering its maritime defenses. This step not only enhances the operational reach of the Coast Guard but also reinforces the nation’s resolve to be self-reliant in defense capabilities.
