Remembering Baba Adhav: A Legacy of Social Justice
Baba Adhav, a renowned socialist leader and activist, passed away at the age of 95, leaving behind a significant legacy in the fight for social justice. His life's mission was to advocate for the weaker and unorganised sections of society, including autorickshaw drivers and porters, who often face exploitation. Adhav's journey began in his teenage years when he became a member of the Rashtra Seva Dal, inspired by the principles of Mahatma Gandhi.
In the 1950s, Adhav was actively involved in significant movements like the Goa Liberation and the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, which aimed to unify Maharashtra. His efforts didn’t stop there; he played an instrumental role in the growth of trade unions in and around Pune, working tirelessly to improve the lives of workers.
Even at the age of 93, Adhav continued his routine of attending the office in Kashewadi every day at 10 am. He held meetings with various groups, including porter organisations and vendors, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to social issues. His impact was also felt in the political arena, where he served as a municipal councillor from the Bhavani Peth constituency for two terms in the 1960s.
Adhav's passing has evoked tributes from leaders across the political spectrum. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed sadness over the loss, highlighting Adhav's relentless fight for the rights of the deprived and unorganised sections of society. He noted how Adhav served as a pillar for many, establishing organisations that provided justice to porters, rickshaw pullers, and construction workers.
Similarly, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar referred to Adhav as a symbol of selflessness and honesty in social work. He emphasized how Adhav dedicated his life to creating hope for the working class. The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President, Harshwardhan Sapkal, paid tribute to Adhav, recognizing him as a guiding light in the progressive movement of Maharashtra.
Baba Adhav's legacy as a champion of social justice will continue to inspire future generations. His dedication and passion for the rights of the underprivileged remind us of the importance of empathy and action in our society.
