Sabarimala Mandala-Makaravilakku Pilgrimage Begins

17 Nov, 2025

The Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage at Sabarimala kicked off on November 16, 2023, welcoming thousands of devotees to the sacred shrine. This annual spiritual event holds profound significance for followers of Lord Ayyappa, and the opening ceremony was a vibrant display of devotion and tradition.

During the ceremonial opening, the newly appointed chief priest, ED Prasad, took charge, succeeding Melshanthi Arun Kumar Namboothiri. The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of chanting as rituals commenced, highlighting the importance of this pilgrimage in the lives of countless devotees.

The Travancore Devaswom Board made extensive arrangements to accommodate the influx of pilgrims. With a cap on the daily number of visitors set at 90,000-70,000 through a virtual queue system and an additional 20,000 via spot booking, the authorities ensured that safety and order were maintained. The sacred shrine will remain open daily from 3 AM to 11 PM throughout the pilgrimage season.

In addition to managing the crowds, the Board constructed a 400-metre retaining wall along the queue complex to provide seating for tired devotees. Hot drinking water kiosks and ginger water distribution points were also established along the routes from Pamba to Sannidhanam, enhancing the comfort of the pilgrims.

The pilgrimage will continue until January 20, 2026, with special rituals planned throughout the season. The Mandala Pooja is scheduled for December 27, and the temple will temporarily close for two days before reopening on December 30. Following the Makaravilakku celebrations on January 14, the temple will close for the season after the darshan of the Palace representative.

This pilgrimage season not only offers spiritual fulfillment but also fosters a sense of community among devotees from different parts of India and the world. The serenity and beauty of Sabarimala during this time is truly a sight to behold, making it a cherished experience for all who partake.
