Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold: A Costly Innovation

06 Jan, 2026

Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone is making headlines for the wrong reasons, as the tech giant reportedly loses money on every unit sold. Launched recently in South Korea, this innovative foldable phone is priced at approximately $2,500, making it the most expensive smartphone in Samsung's lineup. However, the device seems to be more of a technology showcase rather than a commercially viable product.

According to a report by South Korean outlet The Bell, Samsung is deliberately pricing the Galaxy Z TriFold below its production costs. This strategy allows the company to absorb losses on each sale rather than seeking immediate profits. Executives from Samsung have revealed that this approach is intentional, aiming to attract early adopters rather than aiming for mass-market sales.

During the launch event, Lim Sung-taek, Samsung Electronics Korea's vice president, acknowledged the financial pressures caused by rising costs of memory components. Given the global shortage of these components, driven largely by demand from artificial intelligence applications, Samsung is facing significant challenges. The high expenses related to cutting-edge hardware in the Z TriFold are squeezing profit margins even at premium prices.

While it might seem unusual to sell a flagship device at a loss, this practice is not unprecedented in the tech industry. Many premium products, like early versions of gaming consoles, have been launched at a financial loss, with manufacturers banking on future improvements and ecosystem revenues to offset initial deficits. However, Samsung's approach with the Z TriFold stands out due to its exorbitant price tag.

If the reports are accurate, this scenario emphasizes the steep costs associated with advanced foldable technology and highlights the gap between consumer pricing and actual production expenses. For customers outside South Korea, more time is available to observe how this experiment unfolds. The Galaxy Z TriFold is anticipated to hit the United States market in early 2026, but it remains uncertain whether the pricing will be any easier for consumers.
