Scotland Enters T20 World Cup Last Minute

28 Jan, 2026

Cricket Scotland has found itself in an unexpected but thrilling position as they prepare to participate in the Men’s 2026 T20 World Cup. Their entry comes as a last-minute replacement for Bangladesh, which withdrew due to ongoing tensions with co-host India. The announcement was made just a week before the deadline for teams to confirm their squads, leaving Scotland in a race against time to get ready.

Leading the charge for Scotland is 38-year-old Richie Berrington, who will captain the team in their seventh World Cup appearance. With only 48 hours to finalize their squad, the team had to work swiftly to ensure they were prepared for the competition. Despite their rapid preparation, questions have arisen regarding their qualification over Jersey, who performed better in the European qualifiers. However, as the 14th-ranked team in T20I cricket, Scotland received the nod to participate in the prestigious tournament.

Trudy Lindblade, Cricket Scotland’s chief executive, expressed sympathy for the Bangladesh team, acknowledging that their entry into the World Cup was not the ideal scenario. “This is not how we wanted to go to a World Cup,” she stated, reflecting on the complexities surrounding their inclusion. The unpredictability of the qualification process has highlighted the challenges faced by a smaller team like Scotland, which has a limited staff of just over 30 members.

These staff members are working overtime to manage the logistics of the tournament while also juggling responsibilities for other teams, including the Under-19 squad and the women’s team, which is currently competing in Nepal for a T20 World Cup spot. The pressure is on, as they aim to make their mark on the global stage despite the hurdles they face.

As they prepare to replace Bangladesh in Group C, Scotland will kick off their campaign against the West Indies on February 7 in Kolkata, followed by matches against Italy and England at the same venue, and concluding with a game against Nepal in Mumbai. Lindblade humorously noted that, “If we’ve got kits, that’s a bonus,” indicating their lack of sponsorship and resources as they head into the tournament.

With just a week to secure a sponsor and finalize their kit, Scotland's team is embracing the challenge, determined to make the most of this unique opportunity. As they step onto the field, fans will be eager to see how this underdog team performs against some of the world’s best cricketing nations.
