Shocking Train Incident at Chandigarh Railway Station
A shocking incident unfolded at Chandigarh Railway Station when the Kalka–New Delhi Shatabdi Express began moving prematurely, resulting in several passengers getting injured. Surinder Singh Bhardwaj, a 59-year-old resident, described the scene as a "dance of death." The train, which arrived at Platform No. 1 at around 6:49 am, started to move before its scheduled departure time, leaving many passengers in chaos as they attempted to board.
Bhardwaj, who was traveling with his wife and daughter, claimed that the sudden movement of the train triggered panic among the passengers. He was about 40–50 meters away from his designated coach, C-6. Despite the impending departure, he managed to push his family into the coach but fell on the platform while trying to board himself. This sudden start caused many passengers to lose their balance and fall, leading to injuries.
According to Bhardwaj, between 20 to 40 passengers were injured, including elderly individuals and women. He urged the authorities to preserve CCTV footage from Platform No. 1 for further investigation. After receiving Bhardwaj's complaint, the Government Railway Police (GRP) registered an FIR against the loco pilot and other railway staff under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Railways Act.
The FIR charges include serious offenses such as attempted murder and endangering human life through negligent acts. Urmila, the SHO of GRP Chandigarh, confirmed that an FIR had been filed and that a detailed inquiry is in progress to assess the situation.
Naveen Jha, the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Ambala Division, stated that a committee of officers from Mechanical, Operations, and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has been formed to conduct an inquiry. The committee is expected to submit its findings within two days.
While railway officials claim that the train pilot must have sounded the horn before departure, Bhardwaj demands strict actions, including suspension of the driver and compensation for the injured passengers. He emphasized that such incidents threaten lives and severely compromise passenger safety.
