Shreyas Iyer's Fitness Uncertain for South Africa ODIs

12 Nov, 2025

Indian cricket vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is facing uncertainty regarding his participation in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30. Following the two Test matches set for November 14, the series will be held in Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam. Iyer, who recently returned from Australia, is still in recovery from a serious injury sustained during the ODI series, which has left his fitness status unclear.

According to sources, the selection committee has been updated about Iyer's condition. Medical reports indicate that he requires more than a month to regain his match fitness. The board and the selection committee are cautious about rushing his return to the field, prioritizing his health above all. The Indian cricket board confirmed that Iyer is doubtful for the series against South Africa.

The injury was quite severe, with reports stating that Iyer's oxygen levels dropped significantly, causing him to experience a blackout for a brief period. He was admitted to a Sydney hospital after suffering a laceration of the spleen and internal bleeding during a diving catch attempt against Alex Carey in the third ODI against Australia. Thankfully, he was discharged last week and is now on the road to recovery.

The BCCI has expressed gratitude to the medical teams in both Sydney and India for providing Iyer with excellent care. They have also confirmed that he will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations until he is fit enough to return to India. Iyer himself took to social media, expressing his gratitude for the support and kind wishes he has received during this challenging time.

At 30 years old, Iyer's career has faced challenges due to recurring injuries. Earlier this year, he requested a break from red-ball cricket due to back stiffness and fatigue issues, which the board accepted. As fans eagerly await updates on his recovery, Iyer's health remains the top priority for the Indian cricket community.
