In recent times, social media scams targeting women in India have been on the rise. A heart-wrenching account comes from a small town in Uttar Pradesh, where a young woman named Naina fell prey to such a scam during the festive Chhath Puja. Initially, she ignored a friend request from a man claiming to be a doctor named Dr. Khan, who professed to be living in London. However, curiosity drew her in, and soon, their casual chats turned into long discussions over WhatsApp.
Despite the allure of his sophisticated lifestyle, Naina never saw Dr. Khan's face during their video calls, as he always blamed network issues. After a few days, he proposed marriage, which she declined, expressing her desire for friendship. Undeterred, Dr. Khan shifted tactics, asking for her Aadhaar details to send her lavish gifts, claiming they were worth a fortune. Naina rejected the gifts and refused to share her address, which only led to escalating demands from a supposed customs officer.
She was told to pay a processing fee of ₹4,000 to receive the parcels, which were supposedly gifts from Dr. Khan. When she resisted, the threats intensified, including the potential release of private video calls. Feeling cornered, Naina borrowed money from friends to pay the scammers, but they continued to demand more. In a state of panic, she sought to sell her gold jewelry, only to be saved by a perceptive shopkeeper who recognized the scam.
This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers women face online. Cybercrime analysts indicate that scammers often form a false sense of intimacy before manipulating victims into providing personal information or money. They utilize tactics such as pretending to be customs officers demanding fees, creating an atmosphere of fear and urgency.
