SpiceJet, facing financial challenges, is set to lay off approximately 1400 employees, nearly 15% of its current workforce, to trim costs and maintain investor interest. The Gurugram-based airline cites the need to align companywide costs with operational requirements.
The layoffs come as a response to the airline's staggering ₹60 crore salary bill and months-long delays in salary payments. Despite efforts to secure a ₹2200 crore fund infusion, SpiceJet admits some investors have hesitated. Currently operating with 9000 staff and 30 planes, the airline's peak in 2019 boasted 16,000 employees and 118 planes.
