Strengthening India-Canada Ties: Anand Meets Jaishankar

13 Oct, 2025

Canada's Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, has arrived in India, marking a significant moment in the bilateral relations between India and Canada. Her meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is expected to focus on establishing a framework for strategic cooperation in crucial areas such as trade, energy, and security.

This is Anand's first visit to India since she took office as foreign minister in May 2023. During her stay, she will also meet Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss ways to enhance two-way trade ties, which have seen fluctuations due to recent political tensions.

The backdrop of this visit is important; India and Canada have recently taken steps to mend their relations after a rocky period. This followed allegations made by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding a supposed Indian link to the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India firmly rejected these accusations as "absurd," leading to a diplomatic standoff that included the recall of diplomats.

However, the election of Liberal Party leader Mark Carney in April has rekindled hopes for a renewed partnership. Both countries have reinstated their high commissioners, signaling a desire to move forward. Anand's visit is seen as a vital step in revitalizing efforts to deepen economic cooperation and strengthen people-to-people ties.

According to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, this visit represents a positive momentum in India-Canada relations. The focus will be on revitalizing bilateral mechanisms, enhancing economic collaboration, and fostering opportunities for investment and job creation.

As part of her itinerary, Anand will also visit Mumbai to meet with Canadian and Indian firms that are working towards supporting investment opportunities in both countries. This highlights the emphasis on economic engagement, which is seen as a cornerstone of the partnership.

The discussions between Anand and Jaishankar are not only crucial for bilateral trade but also for broader strategic cooperation on global issues. As India and Canada work towards a more collaborative relationship, the outcomes of this meeting could set the stage for future cooperation in various fields, including security and climate change.

Overall, Anand's visit is a testament to the commitment of both nations to foster a stronger, more resilient partnership that benefits their respective economies and societies.
