US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has recently expressed optimism regarding the relationship between India and the United States, despite the new 50% tariffs imposed on Indian exports. Speaking to Fox News, Bessent acknowledged the strong rapport between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, indicating that their relationship at the top level is quite positive.
However, he pointed out the complexities involved in the ongoing negotiations, particularly concerning tariffs and India's purchases of Russian crude oil. Bessent mentioned that India had shown eagerness to negotiate on tariffs soon after Liberation Day, but a final agreement has yet to be reached. He had anticipated that a deal might be struck by May or June, but the discussions seem to have dragged on without resolution.
“This relationship is complicated,” Bessent stated, highlighting that while the leadership connection is strong, various layers need to be addressed for a successful trade agreement.
