Supreme Court Overturns 30% Interest Rate Cap on Credit Cards

The Supreme Court has overturned a 2008 ruling by the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) that capped late payment interest on credit cards at 30% per annum. The court’s decision comes after banks, including Citibank and HSBC, argued that the NCDRC lacked the authority to regulate interest rates, which should be set by the Reserve Bank of India. The NCDRC had initially ruled that such high rates were unfair, comparing them to lower rates in other countries. However, banks emphasized that high interest rates were necessary to cover operational costs and risks.
