Tamil Nadu Elections 2026: 84.51% Voter Turnout
The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections of 2026 have turned out to be a significant event, marked by an impressive voter turnout of 84.51%. Polling concluded at 6 PM across 234 constituencies, with officials allowing all voters who reached polling stations before the deadline to cast their votes. This election has been characterized by intense campaigning and widespread anticipation, as citizens looked forward to making their voices heard.
Early voters included notable figures such as Chief Minister MK Stalin and Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, who cast their votes in Chennai. A total of 4,023 candidates contested across the state, including high-profile leaders. Notably, Chief Minister MK Stalin seeks a second term from Kolathur in Chennai, while his son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, contests from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni.
Reflecting back on the 2021 elections, the DMK-led alliance had secured a decisive victory, claiming 159 out of 234 seats. This time, the political narrative has shifted, with the DMK framing the election as a contest between Tamil Nadu's interests and the central government’s narrative, led by the BJP.
During the campaign, the DMK highlighted its governance model, while the AIADMK countered by addressing issues like law and order, rising debt, and social safety. The involvement of TVK in the elections indicates a significant shift in voter dynamics, showcasing the growing influence of popular culture in politics.
Security for the elections was robust, with around 1,700 companies of central armed police deployed across Tamil Nadu to ensure a smooth polling process. Despite the heat and humidity, citizens displayed remarkable commitment, with reports suggesting that higher turnout was recorded among female voters.
