Tata Trusts in Turmoil: Internal Conflict Exposed

13 Jan, 2026

The Tata Trusts are currently embroiled in a significant internal conflict that has drawn attention from both the media and the government. This turmoil stemmed from a recent meeting on September 11, where a faction of trustees, led by Mehli Mistry, blocked the nomination of Vijay Singh to the Tata Sons board. This decision has been described as “botched” by a senior Tata director, who expressed regret over the fallout that ensued.

In a written response to a letter from Darius Khambata, a trustee of the Tata Trusts, the director stated that the events of the meeting resulted in a loss for the Trusts and led to unwelcome publicity. The Tata Trusts hold a substantial 66% stake in Tata Sons, making the board's composition crucial for their influence and governance.

Khambata’s letter expressed disappointment that Vijay Singh was not present for discussions, emphasizing that there was no personal animosity towards him. Singh, a former Defence Secretary, joined the Tata Trusts in 2018 on Ratan Tata's invitation. The internal split, with a 4:3 vote against Singh’s reappointment, highlights the challenges of maintaining consensus within such a prestigious organization, especially when it comes to leadership decisions.

The director’s comments indicate a perception that the meeting's outcome could resemble a coup, a notion that Khambata firmly rejected. He clarified that the intention was not to usurp control but rather to voice differing views during an annual review of trustee representation on the Tata Sons board.

As the situation unfolds, it raises critical questions about governance, the role of trustees, and the need for effective communication and consensus-building within the Tata Trusts. With Noel Tata and Venu Srinivasan currently representing the Trusts on the Tata Sons board, the path ahead will require careful navigation to restore unity and uphold the legacy of one of India’s most respected business houses.
