Tata Trusts: Khambata Rejects 'Coup' Allegations

27 Nov, 2025

Darius Khambata, a senior lawyer and trustee of Tata Trusts, recently addressed the growing speculation regarding a supposed ‘coup’ or ‘takeover’ within the Trusts following the passing of Ratan Tata. In a letter dated November 10, 2025, he described these claims as “absurd” and emphasized his support for Noel Tata as the Trusts’ Chairman. Khambata expressed concern over the distress caused by media narratives, which he believes misrepresented the intentions of the trustees involved.

In his letter, Khambata clarified that the discussions held during the September 11 meeting were misinterpreted. He stated that there was no intent of undermining any trustee, particularly Vijay Singh, whose nomination to the board of Tata Sons was blocked. Khambata expressed regret that Singh was not present to hear their explanations directly, underlining that their discussions were merely about differing approaches to board representation.

The media portrayal of the events surrounding the Trusts has left Khambata feeling distressed. He criticized the “spin-doctored media narrative” and lamented the unfair slant that caused undue emotional strain on Vijay Singh. Khambata suggested that a greater effort should have been made to achieve consensus among trustees to prevent misunderstandings.

Khambata also stated his opposition to the listing of Tata Sons, emphasizing the need for a strong voice within the board to advocate for the Trusts. Despite the tensions, he reiterated his commitment to the Tata legacy, asserting that Noel Tata is the right person to lead the Trusts forward. He affirmed that he had seconded Mehli Mistry's proposal for Noel's chairmanship, expressing confidence in the future of the Trusts.

The recent resignation of Mehli Mistry, who was involved in a conflict with Noel Tata, further complicates the dynamics within the Trusts. Mistry's departure underscores the internal challenges the Trusts face, yet Khambata remains optimistic about the leadership and direction under Noel Tata.

Ultimately, Khambata called for unity among trustees and a collaborative effort to protect the interests of Tata Trusts. He believes that despite individual disagreements, the overarching goal should be the stability and integrity of the Trusts. Khambata's commitment to uphold the values of the Tata legacy remains unwavering, and he looks forward to strengthening their mission in the future.
