Techie Leaves Meta for Bihar Startup Dream

29 Oct, 2025

Amit Kumar, a former Vice President of Product Development at Meta, made headlines when he left his lucrative position to foster a startup ecosystem in Bihar. With degrees from IIT Delhi and MIT Sloan, Kumar returned to his home state in 2023 with a vision to create opportunities and mentor aspiring entrepreneurs.

In his viral LinkedIn post, he expressed his dedication to making Bihar a hub for innovation, not just in agriculture and manufacturing, but in technology as well. He aimed to inspire young founders by hosting workshops and connecting them with investors from Silicon Valley.

However, the reality he faced was starkly different from his expectations. Kumar encountered significant challenges, including bureaucratic hurdles and a lack of collaborative spirit within the local startup community. Despite successfully raising ₹130 crore in pre-seed capital, he found local interactions fraught with self-interest rather than teamwork.

Kumar's experience revealed a deeper issue: a lack of integrity and accountability in many local dealings. He acknowledged that his emotional attachment to Bihar may have clouded his judgment. His trust in the local community often led to disappointment, as he discovered that personal agendas frequently overshadowed collaborative efforts.

After two years of trying to establish a sustainable operation in Bihar, Kumar made the tough decision to relocate his business. He emphasized that this choice was not born out of frustration, but rather an acceptance of the ground realities that hindered his vision. He expressed hope for Bihar's long-term potential, advocating for change through integrity and hard work.

Despite the setbacks, Kumar remains optimistic about the future of Bihar. He believes that true transformation can occur only when the community acknowledges its shortcomings and commits to genuine efforts. His journey serves as a reminder that while the path to innovation may be fraught with challenges, perseverance and integrity can pave the way for future success.
