Temba Bavuma Returns for South Africa A in India

17 Oct, 2025

Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa's cricket team, is set to play for South Africa A in India as they prepare for a significant Test series against India. After suffering a calf injury during an ODI series against England, Bavuma missed earlier matches but is now focused on regaining his match fitness. This upcoming tour is crucial for both Bavuma and his team as they face the challenges of playing in India, a country renowned for its spin-friendly conditions.

Cricket South Africa announced that Bavuma will participate in the second first-class match as part of his return-to-play program. The South African A squad also includes players like Zubayr Hamza and Prenelan Subrayen, who are currently part of the Test squad in Pakistan. This tour will allow Bavuma to get much-needed practice before the Test series against India, which is part of the World Test Championship cycle.

Historically, South Africa has had mixed results in India. They won a Test series in 2000 and offered a stiff challenge in 2007 and 2010, drawing 1-1 in successive series. However, in their last two tours, they lost both series by a 3-0 margin. As the defending champions of the World Test Championship, South Africa enters this series with renewed hopes and a strong bowling attack.

South Africa A head coach Wandile Gwavu expressed enthusiasm for the tour, stating, "We’re looking forward to this tour and are eager to take on the challenge of competing against India in their own backyard." He emphasized the team's improved ability to play and bowl spin, which is vital for success in subcontinent conditions.

This tour will not only include two four-day fixtures but also three 50-over matches in Rajkot, providing a comprehensive experience for the South African players. The exposure to subcontinent surfaces and the need for adaptability will be invaluable as they build towards future tours and potential opportunities for the main South African squad.

Overall, the upcoming matches are a significant opportunity for South Africa A to prepare for the challenges ahead and for Bavuma to lead his team back into competitive form.
