Tense Shootings in Surrey: Indian Restaurant Targeted
On a tense Monday in Surrey, British Columbia, residents were shaken by two separate shooting incidents, leading to a significant police response. The first incident occurred near a police station, while the second targeted an Indian restaurant, raising alarms about rising violence linked to extortion in the area.
Gunfire erupted Monday afternoon close to the Surrey Police Service’s community office at the intersection of King George Boulevard and 107 Avenue. Witnesses described a scene of chaos, with several shots fired, prompting police to lock down the area immediately. Officers from the Surrey Police Service, supported by the Emergency Response Team and a police dog unit, quickly apprehended a suspect who allegedly fired additional rounds at the police office before being subdued.
As investigators began gathering evidence, traffic and pedestrian access around the scene were suspended. However, police have not yet disclosed the shooter’s motive or any potential connections to other incidents, leaving the community anxious for answers.
Earlier that same day, gunfire was reported at the Ustaad G76 Indian restaurant on King George Boulevard. Police responded at approximately 2:20 a.m., finding multiple rounds fired into the closed establishment. Thankfully, no one was inside during the attack. Surrey Police spokesperson Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton indicated that these incidents might be related to a spate of extortion attempts in the region.
Authorities have noted a disturbing rise in extortion-related violence, particularly affecting South Asian-owned homes and businesses. In 2025 alone, Surrey has reported 56 extortion attempts, with 31 of them involving gunfire. In response to this alarming trend, the B.C. government and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have formed a special task force to address the issue.
As investigations into both shootings continue, police are urging residents and business owners to remain vigilant. They encourage the community to report any threats or suspicious activities to help curb this trend of violence. The safety of the community remains a top priority for law enforcement as they seek to restore peace and security to Surrey.
