Thackeray Brothers Unite: BMC Elections Shake-Up

13 Jan, 2026

The upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are poised to be a political turning point in Mumbai as estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray announce their reunion. This collaboration, set to be officially declared on December 24, could significantly alter the dynamics for major political parties like the BJP and Congress, especially with the elections scheduled for January 15 next year.

United, the Thackeray cousins plan to contest a total of 227 seats in the BMC, which is crucial for maintaining their political legacy. Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) will reportedly field candidates for 150 seats, while Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) will contest 77 seats. This strategic alliance comes after two decades of rivalry, where Raj Thackeray had broken away to form the MNS back in 2006.

The Thackeray reunion is expected to create a ‘Thackeray vs The Rest’ scenario, presenting new challenges for the BJP, which has been striving to consolidate its power in Mumbai. Traditionally, the Thackerays have championed the interests of the Marathi-speaking population, which constitutes a significant segment of the city. The BJP, having performed well in recent local body elections, now faces a unified front that could threaten its electoral prospects.

For the BJP, this election is crucial as it seeks control over the BMC for the first time, challenging the legacy of the Thackerays. While the BJP has dismissed the reunion as a "desperate act," party insiders are reportedly developing counter-strategies to tackle the revived Thackeray influence. The BJP is also banking on its coalition with the Eknath Shinde-led faction of Shiv Sena to counter the Thackerays.

On the other hand, the Congress party appears hesitant to ally with Raj Thackeray due to his controversial history. The party's decision to contest independently may lead to a divisive electoral battle, potentially allowing the BJP to exploit any fragmentation of votes among opposition parties. The upcoming BMC polls will not only test the resilience of the Thackeray brand but also the Congress's ability to maintain its identity without regional alliances.

As the political landscape evolves, the implications of the Thackeray reunion extend beyond just the BMC elections, potentially reshaping the future of Mumbai's governance and political alliances.
