The AI Empire: A Call for Responsible Tech

13 Dec, 2025

The emergence of generative AI has raised critical questions about its environmental and societal consequences. In her book, "Empire of AI," Karen Hao highlights the alarming similarities between modern tech companies and colonial empires. She argues that just like those empires, today’s AI firms extract resources to maximize profits while imposing their ideologies on a global scale.

During a recent interview at the Bangalore Literature Festival, Hao elaborated on her observations regarding the unchecked growth of AI companies. She began researching this topic in 2019, influenced by significant works that draw parallels between the AI industry and colonial practices. As she compiled her book, the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT solidified her belief that the narrative of AI needed to be framed within this imperial context.

Hao explains that each tech company can be seen as an empire competing with others. They extract not only data but also human resources, culture, and knowledge, often disregarding local contexts and perspectives. For instance, the narratives generated by AI often reflect a dominant, Western viewpoint, which can distort historical truths and narratives. This raises concerns about the perceived fairness and objectivity of AI-generated content.

With the support of governments, particularly in the U.S., these companies are becoming more powerful than individual nation-states. Hao warns that this trend may lead to a new form of techno-authoritarianism where a few elite individuals dictate the future for billions, undermining democratic values.

Moreover, the environmental implications are alarming. The data centers required to support generative AI are consuming unprecedented amounts of energy. Hao mentions that we might need 100 Earths to sustain the current trajectory of AI growth. As global energy demands rise due to data center expansions, climate goals are threatened, particularly in Europe.

The fascination with generative AI stems from its ability to engage users through language, making it a powerful tool for companies. However, the focus on spectacle over substance can lead to misuse and monopolization of AI technologies. Hao emphasizes the importance of developing specialized AI systems that can address specific needs, such as preserving endangered languages or tackling climate change.

As the conversation around AI evolves, it becomes critical for stakeholders to prioritize responsible practices and accountability. The world must navigate the complexities of AI development carefully, lest we recreate the oppressive dynamics of the past under the guise of technological advancement.
