Born in Ahmedabad in 1962, Adani, who now heads the influential Adani Group, rose from modest beginnings. In 1998, he and associate Shantilal Patel were abducted in Ahmedabad; bandits ambushed their car and demanded a $1.5-2 million ransom before their release.
