Unlocking India's Mid-Sized Business Potential
India's economy is significantly supported by its mid-sized companies, which generate between ₹50 to ₹300 crore in revenue. These family-owned manufacturers and regional service providers employ millions and anchor essential supply chains across the country. Built over decades through bank credit and reinvested profits, these businesses have achieved commendable discipline. However, this success also presents a ceiling that limits their growth potential.
Many mid-market businesses in India are not yet structured to attract institutional investment. Their governance, financial reporting, and management practices need considerable improvement before they can easily access equity capital. While this observation is accurate, it is often misinterpreted as the sole barrier to their growth.
Prime Minister Modi has articulated a vision for Indian MSMEs to "scale from local to global." His call for the private sector to “invest boldly in R&D, supply chains, and quality” aligns with this vision. The initiatives like the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Fund, along with SEBI's revamped SME IPO platform and a rationalized framework for creating Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), are commendable steps towards this goal.
Importantly, the Prime Minister's emphasis on economic self-reliance should not be seen as a retreat. Instead, it is a recognition that India’s deepest strengths lie within. In a world marked by turbulence, nations that can mobilize their internal strengths are more likely to emerge stronger. The mid-sized companies that have quietly built the real economy over decades are precisely these strengths.
By providing these businesses with equity capital, India can raise governance standards, encourage ambitious growth, and ultimately compound value. This strategy is essential for turning current geopolitical challenges into opportunities. By leveraging the potential of its mid-sized companies, India can lay a robust foundation for the upcoming decade of growth.
