Unpaid Work in India: Women Still Carry the Load

The Time Use Survey 2024 reveals that Indian women still invest significantly more time in unpaid domestic work than men, despite a slight decrease. On average, women devote 289 minutes daily to household tasks, 201 minutes more than men. They also spend more time on caregiving activities, underscoring traditional gender roles in India. While female participation in paid work has risen to 20.6%, men still outpace women in employment time. This survey highlights the ongoing imbalance in household responsibilities and the changing landscape of work in India, suggesting a need for a more equitable distribution of tasks.
