Upcoming Assembly Election Dates in Five States

17 Mar, 2026

The Election Commission of India is poised to announce the assembly election dates for West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry today at 4 PM. This announcement comes as the terms of the assemblies in these states are nearing their end, generating significant political excitement. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition INDIA bloc are both preparing for crucial battles, especially in West Bengal where the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP are set to clash once again.

The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, will hold a press conference at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi to share the details. The assembly terms in these states end between May and June, with West Bengal's term concluding on May 7 and Tamil Nadu's on May 10. The anticipation around the poll dates has been palpable, especially after the Commission's recent visits to review election preparedness.

Political dynamics are heating up as the BJP is currently in power in Assam and Puducherry, while the TMC leads in West Bengal. Kerala is governed by the Left, and Tamil Nadu has the DMK-Congress alliance. The West Bengal elections, in particular, are being closely watched, with speculations suggesting the possibility of voting being held in two phases, a departure from the previous election's long-drawn-out process.

During a meeting with political parties, the opposition urged for fewer phases in the upcoming West Bengal elections. With 294 seats at stake, the BJP has advocated for a single-phase election to ensure a smooth electoral process, while the CPI(M) has echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the risks associated with multi-phase voting.

Since 2011, West Bengal's elections have been conducted in multiple phases, often leading to concerns over electoral fairness and the movement of anti-social elements. The upcoming elections are crucial not just for the TMC, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, but also for the BJP, which aims to strengthen its footing in the state.

The 2021 elections saw TMC winning decisively, despite predictions of a close contest with the BJP. As the political landscape evolves, all eyes are on today's announcement and its implications for the future of these states.
