Usman Tariq: Pakistan's Cricket Sensation Rising from Struggles

07 Feb, 2026

Usman Tariq, Pakistan's emerging cricket star, has a remarkable story that traces his journey from humble beginnings to the international stage. Inspired by the film "MS Dhoni: The Untold Story," Usman decided to chase his cricket dreams, just like Dhoni abandoned his steady job as a TTE. Usman's life took a turn when he left his role in an automobile factory to pursue cricket in Karachi.

His sling-arm bowling action, reminiscent of the legendary Lasith Malinga, quickly caught the eyes of cricket scouts. Nabeel Hashmi, general manager of the Quetta Gladiators, first noticed Usman at a Ramadan tournament. Hashmi described how Usman's unique style made it difficult for batsmen to set themselves up against him. Despite not being picked immediately, Usman's talent remained on Hashmi's radar.

Usman's cricketing journey included a stint in the USA's Minor League Cricket, where he showcased his skills. Although life in the USA seemed comfortable, Usman recognized the significance of playing in the Sindh Premier League in Karachi. With PSL scouts present, he took the opportunity seriously, delivering exceptional performances and taking 13 wickets in just four matches. This performance led to his inclusion in the PSL.

His success continued as he competed in various leagues, including the Abu Dhabi T10, where he faced off against top international players like Jos Buttler and Nicholas Pooran. Despite being reported for an illegal bowling action twice, Usman persevered, asserting that his bent elbow is due to a double-jointed condition.

Usman’s journey wasn't without personal struggles. Losing his father at a young age and facing hardships in Afghanistan, he lived through tough winters and financial difficulties. His cousin, Haseeb Ur Rahman, shared how they both worked hard to support their families, with Haseeb even giving up part of his salary so Usman could survive during difficult times.

Eventually, Usman returned to Karachi, where he balanced his education with his passion for cricket. After finding a reliable job in Dubai, he resumed attending cricket trials. His determination was reignited after watching the film about Dhoni, motivating him to take the leap into a full-time cricket career.

Today, Usman Tariq stands as a symbol of resilience and determination, showcasing how passion can turn dreams into reality, inspiring many aspiring cricketers in India and beyond.
