Uthappa Questions Shubman Gill as Future Captain

07 Oct, 2025

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has stirred conversations by questioning the likelihood of Shubman Gill becoming India’s next all-format captain. Uthappa believes that the talented 26-year-old still has to prove himself, particularly in T20 cricket, where he feels Gill needs to secure his position more firmly.

In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, Uthappa highlighted his views on Gill's current standing in the team. He stated, "I still think Gill needs to secure his spot first." Despite being named the vice-captain for the upcoming tour to Australia, Uthappa emphasized that such a role does not guarantee future captaincy. “Vice-captaincy in India doesn’t mean very much,” he remarked, pointing out how quickly things can change in Indian cricket.

Uthappa also mentioned Shreyas Iyer as a potential candidate for the T20I captaincy, suggesting that he could take over from Suryakumar Yadav. This insight reflects Uthappa’s belief in Iyer's capabilities and readiness for a leadership role. He further elaborated on Gill’s performance, noting that while he has shown promise in Test cricket, his ODI numbers could improve as he gains more experience.

In addition, Uthappa acknowledged Rohit Sharma's significant contributions to Indian cricket. He expressed confidence that if Rohit remains fit, he will be part of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Uthappa praised Rohit’s evolution as a player and how he has adapted his batting style in recent years, becoming a more destructive force in ODIs.

As Indian cricket continues to evolve, Uthappa's reflections shed light on the complexities of leadership roles and the importance of consistent performance. With young talents like Gill and Iyer in the spotlight, the future of Indian cricket leadership remains an engaging topic for fans and analysts alike.
