Who is Kartik Sharma? The 19-Year-Old CSK Bought for ₹14.2 Crore
When the bidding for Kartik Sharma crossed ₹10 crore at the IPL 2026 mini-auction, the cricket world paused. This was an uncapped 19-year-old from Bharatpur, Rajasthan — someone with no IPL cap, no international debut, and a base price of just ₹30 lakh. Yet Chennai Super Kings kept raising their paddle, eventually landing him at ₹14.20 crore, a figure that tied the all-time record for the most expensive uncapped Indian player in IPL auction history.
So who exactly is Kartik Sharma, and why did CSK want him this badly?
The Cricketer
Kartik Sharma is a right-handed wicketkeeper-batter who operates in the middle order. He is known for his clean striking, six-hitting ability, and composure under pressure — a rare combination at 19. In the 2024–25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he finished as Rajasthan's leading run-scorer with 445 runs across 9 matches. In T20 cricket, he has posted 334 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 163, with 28 sixes. He also made a statement in red-ball cricket with a century on his Ranji Trophy debut — 113 off 115 balls against Uttarakhand.
His trial performances added fuel to the fire. At a KKR trial, he reportedly smashed a century at a strike rate of 285, which set off serious interest among IPL scouts. Dinesh Karthik personally praised his wicketkeeping technique. Kevin Pietersen and Aakash Chopra have tipped him as a future Indian team player.
The Family Story
Kartik's father Manoj Sharma was a school teacher who gave up his job entirely to focus on his son's cricket. His mother Radha works as an anganwadi worker. The family sold their farmland in Bahnera and his mother sold her jewellery to keep the cricketing dream alive through four years without state selection.
When the ₹14.2 crore number flashed on screen, Kartik's first public statement was that he wanted to repay his father's ₹26 lakh loan.
The CSK Fit
CSK already have MS Dhoni and Sanju Samson as wicketkeeper options, but Kartik brings a different dimension — a young, aggressive Indian finisher built for the future. He trained with CSK's squad during IPL 2025 and is now a permanent member of the setup.
With Deepak Chahar as a childhood mentor and Dhoni as an idol, Kartik Sharma joins CSK not just as a player — but as a legacy investment.
