Will Aaron Finch's T20I Record Fall Soon?

15 Oct, 2025

Records in cricket are often seen as stepping stones for future generations, and among these, a few stand out as monumental achievements. One such record is Brian Lara's jaw-dropping 400 runs scored in a Test match against England in 2004, a feat that has remained untouched for 21 years. In the One Day Internationals (ODIs), Indian cricketing sensation Rohit Sharma holds the record with a staggering 264 runs against Sri Lanka in 2014. Meanwhile, in the T20 International format, former Australian captain Aaron Finch set the bar high with his remarkable score of 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018.

While these records are formidable, Aaron Finch has expressed his belief that his T20I record is the most vulnerable and could be broken first. He made this assertion public through his social media channels, where he also identified three players he thinks have the talent to surpass his score. Among them is India's Abhishek Sharma, who is currently the top-ranked T20I batter in the world. Finch also mentioned his compatriot Travis Head and England's Jos Buttler as strong contenders.

Finch's confidence in the record being broken stems from the upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in India. He pointed out that the batting-friendly pitches in India have already led to high-scoring matches in recent series, including the T20I series against Bangladesh and England, and during the last two seasons of the Indian Premier League. Finch emphasized that the combination of excellent batting conditions and the power of the next generation of cricketers will likely lead to a record-breaking performance.

As Finch stated, "I’m pretty sure it’ll be broken at this T20 World Cup. There’ll be some really good batting wickets and the next generation’s power and skill are on another level." His statement reflects the excitement building around the tournament and the potential for thrilling performances that could reshape the record books.

With the T20 World Cup just around the corner, cricket fans in India and worldwide will be eagerly watching to see if Finch's prediction comes true and if a new record-holder emerges from the ranks of some of the finest young talent in the game.
