Will Tax Cuts Boost Consumer Spending in India?

Consumer-oriented companies in India are cautious about an immediate growth rebound, despite some positive signs. Kotak Institutional Equities' CEO, Pratik Gupta, noted that while good monsoons and strong crop yields may boost rural demand, the impact of recent income tax cuts is uncertain. The tax exemption limit has risen from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, saving taxpayers around Rs 1 lakh crore. However, this relief is expected to mainly influence low-ticket discretionary spending, such as holidays and apparel, rather than staples. Gupta emphasized that job creation and wage growth are critical for sustained consumption, with optimism in luxury sectors and life insurance as potential growth areas.
