Delhi Dust Alert: Protect Your Lungs

18 Mar, 2026

Residents of Delhi-NCR are currently facing serious air quality issues due to hazy skies and elevated dust levels. Weather experts attribute this phenomenon to strong winds from western regions, which have carried dust from Balochistan and parts of Pakistan into North India. As a result, healthcare professionals are raising alarms about the potential effects on respiratory health.

According to Dr. Anshuman Rajkhowa, an Associate Consultant in Pulmonology at Manipal Hospital, the suspended dust particles in the air can easily infiltrate the human respiratory system. This is especially concerning in densely populated cities where construction activities already contribute to poor air quality. Dr. Rajkhowa explains that repeated exposure to fine dust particles can lead to irritation and inflammation in the lungs.

The fine dust, which is prevalent in urban environments, can penetrate deep into the lungs when inhaled. Over time, this can cause irritation of the airways and trigger inflammatory responses. Both individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions and otherwise healthy people are at risk. Dr. Rajkhowa emphasizes that the respiratory tract is particularly vulnerable due to its direct interaction with airborne pollutants.

When levels of particulate matter are high, the body's natural defense mechanisms may become overwhelmed. This increases the likelihood of experiencing respiratory symptoms and airway inflammation. Common warning signs include coughing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. Dr. Rajkhowa advises that if individuals notice these symptoms repeatedly when outdoors, it could indicate chronic exposure to environmental dust.

Certain groups, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health issues, are more susceptible to dust-related respiratory problems. To mitigate these risks, Dr. Rajkhowa recommends wearing well-fitted N95 masks when outdoors in dusty or poor air quality areas. These masks can significantly reduce the inhalation of harmful particulate matter.

Indoor air quality is equally important. Regularly cleaning air conditioner filters and preventing dust from entering homes can help reduce indoor exposure. Dr. Rajkhowa suggests using wet cleaning methods at home, as they minimize airborne dust and prevent it from circulating indoors.

If symptoms such as coughing, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing persist for several days, it’s crucial to seek medical attention. Healthcare professionals can conduct lung function tests to assess how well the lungs are functioning and identify any inflammation resulting from prolonged exposure to dust and pollutants.
