This simple urine test checks for the presence of a protein called albumin.
Dr. M. Sheetal Kumar, a consultant physician and diabetologist at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, highlights that even small amounts of albumin, known as microalbuminuria (MAU), can be an early warning sign of hidden hypertension-related risks. These risks include organ damage and can strongly predict future health issues, particularly cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease.
The causes of urinary albumin leakage are mainly twofold. Higher urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) values are associated with elevated blood pressure and increased levels of aldosterone—a hormone that regulates blood pressure but can exacerbate hypertension if levels remain persistently high.
In healthy individuals, kidneys efficiently filter blood, and albumin is rarely found in urine. However, in patients with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or hypertension, microalbuminuria can appear much earlier than noticeable kidney damage. Its presence not only indicates early changes in kidney function but also points to broader issues like endothelial dysfunction, which affects the health of blood vessels.
The good news is that early detection of MAU allows healthcare providers and patients to take proactive measures before serious complications arise. Interventions such as lifestyle changes and medication can often reduce or even reverse microalbuminuria, thereby lowering the long-term risks of heart disease and kidney failure.
