New Data Protection Act: RTI Concerns Addressed

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, has raised concerns among leaders of the INDIA bloc, who fear it might undermine the Right to Information (RTI) Act. However, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reassured that the new law aligns with privacy rights and ensures transparency. He emphasized that personal data required to be disclosed under existing laws, like the RTI Act, will still be available. Vaishnaw stated that the amendments will not weaken the RTI Act but will enhance individual privacy rights. Critics, however, worry that these changes could restrict investigative journalism and hinder access to information.
