Remembering Karur: TVK Chief Supports Victims' Families

27 Oct, 2025

A month after the tragic stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which resulted in the loss of 41 lives, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay met with the grieving families of the victims. This gathering took place at a resort in Mahabalipuram, where the TVK arranged accommodation and transportation for around 50 families, demonstrating their commitment to supporting those affected by this devastating incident.

During the meeting, Vijay expressed his profound sorrow for the tragedy and reiterated the party's promise to aid the victims' families financially. Each family that lost a loved one will receive ₹20 lakh, while those injured in the stampede will be given ₹2 lakh. The TVK has already credited a total of ₹7.8 crore to 39 families, showcasing their efforts to provide immediate assistance in a time of need.

The Karur stampede occurred on September 27 during a large gathering, prompting scrutiny over the TVK's organization of the event. In the aftermath, two party functionaries, VP Mathiyazhagan and Masi Pounraj, were arrested but later granted bail. Legal representatives indicated that the case has now shifted to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which will handle the investigation moving forward.

The Supreme Court has mandated a CBI probe into the incident, underscoring the necessity for a thorough, impartial investigation. The court remarked that restoring public faith in the criminal justice system is crucial, particularly given the severity of the incident, which has shaken the national conscience. The establishment of a three-member committee to oversee the investigation has also been announced, ensuring that the inquiry remains independent and unbiased.

As the situation develops, the TVK's response and the CBI's investigation will be closely watched by the public. The hope is that this tragic event will lead to greater accountability and improvements in safety protocols during large gatherings, preventing future disasters.
