Stay Safe: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in Delhi NCR

03 Oct, 2025

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) has recently seen a significant increase in Delhi NCR, causing unease among parents and schools. This mild viral infection, primarily affecting children, is caused by the Coxsackievirus A16 and Enterovirus 71. These viruses spread easily through airborne droplets, saliva, feces, and contaminated surfaces, making it crucial for parents to be vigilant.

Dr. Sameer Punia, a Senior Consultant and Pediatric Intensivist at Aakash Healthcare, shares essential tips for prevention. HFMD can spread rapidly in crowded settings such as classrooms and daycare centers, especially during the monsoon season when hygiene practices may slip. Early detection is key, as symptoms typically appear within 3 to 6 days after exposure.

Parents should watch for signs, including mouth sores that can make it difficult for children to stay hydrated. While most cases of HFMD resolve on their own within a week to 10 days, it is important to seek medical advice if a child exhibits severe symptoms, such as high fever or extreme discomfort.

Health authorities in Delhi NCR are monitoring the outbreak closely, providing guidance to schools and parents. Dr. Punia emphasizes that rigorous hygiene practices are the most effective defense against HFMD. Parents and caregivers should ensure thorough handwashing and cleanliness in shared spaces to help curb the disease's spread.

Most children recover fully with home treatment, but parents must remain alert. By being proactive and implementing preventive measures, families can help avoid the transmission of HFMD within their communities. Staying informed and vigilant is essential to keeping children safe and healthy during this outbreak.
