Thallium Poisoning: Family's Shocking Ordeal in Mohali

05 Feb, 2026

In a disturbing case from Mohali, Rachna Kapoor, a 49-year-old widow and director of Global Vision Network, has accused her employee of attempting to poison her entire family with thallium, a highly toxic chemical. The alleged poisoning occurred when the family consumed panjiri, a traditional Indian sweet, prepared for the celebration of Kapoor's granddaughter's birth in Germany. Kapoor claims this act amounts to a mass murder attempt against her loved ones.

Kapoor's ordeal began when she traveled to Germany to support her daughter, advocate Ranjeeta Batra, during childbirth. After consuming the panjiri, several family members, including Kapoor, fell gravely ill. Reports indicate that within ten days of consuming the poisoned food, they were placed on ventilator support. Disturbingly, even Kapoor's newborn granddaughter, who had only breastfed for a day, showed traces of the poison in her system.

After her condition deteriorated, Kapoor was airlifted back to India for treatment. Initially admitted to Medanta Hospital, she has since been moved to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and is currently receiving care at Paras Hospital. Medical evaluations confirmed thallium poisoning, a serious health risk that often goes undetected in initial tests, complicating diagnosis.

Kapoor's daughter’s thallium levels were alarmingly high, while her granddaughter's blood showed a level far exceeding the normal range. Kapoor suspects her employee, who had been living with them for several years, of carrying out this heinous act. She claims that he was the only person in her home before she left for Germany and went missing on the day she learned of the poisoning.

Despite her efforts to file a police report in Mohali, Kapoor alleges that no action has been taken by local authorities. After a meeting with the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), she expressed frustration over the lack of a formal investigation and called for immediate action. Kapoor is demanding an FIR against the suspected employee and heightened security for her family, fearing for their safety.

As the investigation unfolds, the seriousness of this case raises questions about safety and the trustworthiness of those we employ. Kapoor’s call for justice highlights the urgent need for thorough investigations into such allegations, especially when they involve the safety of families. With the potential for a high-level inquiry, the case could shed light on the darker aspects of personal relationships and workplace dynamics.
